Franklin's rich mountain and cultural heritage is celebrated with festival throughout the year.

Held each year on Father's Day Weekend in June, the annual Taste of Scotland Festival in Franklin, NC is filled with Scottish fun, food, fashion, music, dance, and culture for the whole family! It celebrates Franklin's Scots-Irish Heritage very appropriately as we have one of the highest concentrations of Scots-Irish decedents in the country. Be sure to visit the Scottish Tartans Museum in Downtown Franklin, the only museum of its kind in the United States.

Sponsored by the Folk Heritage Association of Macon County and funded in part by the Franklin Main Street Program, the Franklin Folk Festival is a two-day celebration of our mountain way of life. From milking cows to shingle splitting to quilting, visitors will have the opportunity to experience what mountain life was like when Franklin was first established over 150 years ago.

It features the infamous "Punkin Roll" down Phillips Street, costume contests, parade, and more.

Winter Wonderland is held the first Friday following Thanksgiving, in downtown Franklin, North Carolina. Town hill is transformed into an old-fashioned holiday atmosphere as the streets and "windows come alive" with living scenes from Franklin's past.

SMOKY MOUNTAIN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

This is the area's newest state-of-the-art entertainment venue. Opening in July 2009 the theatre will feature great stars including the Oak Ridge Boys, Ronnie Milsap, Charlie Daniels, broadway style productions, and more! Click on the title above to visit their site.

Franklin has been long known as the "Gem Capital of the World" and you can spend many fun days looking for ruby, sapphire and other native stones to the Franklin, NC area. Most mines are open Spring, Sumer and Fall. Below is a list of mines and links to their websites where available.

PICKIN' ON THE SQUARE

Sponsored by the Town of Franklin, this FREE outdoor event is held each Saturday evening Memorial Day Weekend through October. Pickin on the Square is held outdoors on the square in downtown Franklin and features a variety of music from mountain music to rock, square dancing, and much more.

HIKING

Franklin, North Carolina is situated just minutes from the world famous Appalachian Trail. The AT brings thousands of hikers to our area each year to explore the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Nantahala National Forest. The lesser know but just a beautiful Bartram Trail also runs near Franklin and in Highlands, North Carolina as well.

The Franklin area is home to many breathtaking waterfalls. Just minutes from downtown you can literally walk behind the 75 foot cascade of Dry Falls, see the elegant Bridal Veil Falls, and view the roaring 250ft Cullsaja Falls.

  • May 7 – “Airing of the Quilts” Mothers Day weekend
    Springtime meant that it was time for Spring cleaning and the "Airing of the Quilts" and other bed linens. On Saturday May 7, 2011 (Mother's Day weekend), we'd like to honor this tradition with a "Quilt Airing" of our own here in Macon County We invite you to participate by hanging quilts made by mom, grandma, and the other special women in your life, on porch railings, fences, businesses, and more. It's our hope that we can encourage visitors totravel all around Macon County looking for the quilts that are "airing," as well as for the quilt blocks that are a part of the Macon County Quilt Trail. Downtown Franklin will be alive with quilts and have a special celebration from 10-4.

  • June 18 - Taste of Scotland Weekend
    Street festival with all things Scottish including entertainment, clans, authentic Scottish foods, music & dancing, Pipe & Drum Bands, parade, Border Collie demonstrations, crafts, shortbread contest, children’s Highland games and many other contests. Free Admission. 9am to 5pm

  • July 4 - 4th of July Parade in Historic Downtown Franklin 10:00 am until 1 pm. Parade begins at 10:00 am.

  • July 15 & 16 - 8th Annual Franklin Folk Festival - A celebration of Appalachian heritage in Downtown Franklin. Over 40 living exhibits of authentic mountain living, food, entertainment and more. Call 828-369-7411 for details. Sponsored by Macon County Folk Heritage Association.

  • October 21 & 22- 15th Annual Pumpkin Fest

    • October 21 - Hayrides from East Franklin Shopping Center from 3pm - 6pm, After School treats for the kids in East Franklin Shopping Center from 3pm - 5pm.
