A SHORT HISTORY & INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT BRYSON CITY, NORTH CAROLINA

Bryson City, North Carolina is the seat of Swain County which was formed in 1871 from parts of Jackson & Macon Counties.

Native Americans have been living and hunting in the vicinity of what is now Bryson City for nearly 14,000 years. The village of Kituhwa, which the Cherokee believed to be their oldest village, was located along the Tuckasegee River immediately upstream from Bryson City. In 1567, an orata (minor chief) from Kituhwa is believed to have met with Spanish explorer Juan Pardo in the French Broad Valley to the north.

Bryson City is located in the western part of North Carolina in the Great Smoky Mountains. Swain County has a larger proportion of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park than any other county in North Carolina or Tennessee.

The highest point in the county is Clingmans Dome, elevation 6,643 feet, located on the NC/TN border. This mountain is the third highest peak in North Carolina, and an observation tower is located on its summit.

The Nantahala which flows through Swain & Macon Counties is one of the most popular rivers in the nation. In 2010, it was announced that the Nantahala River would host the 2013 World Freestyle Kayaking Championships.[The Oconaluftee River also flows through Swain County in the town of Cherokee.

Higher learning institutions are in nearby Jackson County which is home to Western Carolina University. Located in the town of Cullowhee, NC. The main campus of Southwestern Community College is also located in the Webster area of Jackson County.

Located in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina, Swain County Schools offer students a “natural” learning environment that cannot be matched. Bryson City, NC is served by one high school, one middle school, and a Pre K school. The Swain County Public School System serves over 2,000 students with 170 faculty members on staff.
